Does HalalScript tell me if my medication is halal?
We tell you what's in it and where the animal-derived ingredients come from. For example, that a capsule's gelatin is porcine, bovine, or plant. We do not issue religious rulings. Whether a medication is permissible for you is a question for a qualified scholar.
Why does the manufacturer matter?
Halal status depends on the exact product, not just the drug name. The same medication made by different companies can use different ingredient sources. One manufacturer's capsule may use plant-based gelatin while another's uses porcine. That's why we track it at the manufacturer and NDC level, and why the NDC on your bottle matters.
Where does your information come from?
The list of ingredients comes from the FDA's official labeling (published through DailyMed). The source of an animal-derived ingredient, which the label usually doesn't state, comes from our direct correspondence with the manufacturer's medical information department. Every finding is dated and attributed.
Why do I have to pay for some of it?
The generic fact ("this drug contains gelatin") is free. Anyone can read it off the label. The part that costs money is what the label doesn't tell you: which manufacturer's gelatin is porcine, bovine, or plant. We find that out by contacting manufacturers directly. You're paying for that verification work, not for a religious answer.
What if you don't have my medication?
Enter the NDC from your package and leave your email. We'll contact the manufacturer and email you when we have a verified answer. Manufacturer inquiries usually take two to six weeks. Paid members get priority in the queue.
Should I stop taking a medication I'm worried about?
No. Not on your own. Never stop or change a prescribed medication without talking to your doctor or pharmacist. Stopping a needed medication can be dangerous. We provide information; decisions about your treatment belong with your provider, and questions of permissibility belong with your scholar.
Who reviews the information?
Ingredient information is reviewed by Syed Fahad, PharmD, a pharmacist licensed in Texas (License #48292), with 18 years of experience. This review is for factual accuracy only and does not create a pharmacist-patient relationship.
What about ingredients like magnesium stearate or glycerin?
These can be animal-derived or plant-derived, and the label rarely says which. Where we've confirmed the source with the manufacturer, we show it. Where we haven't yet, we say so plainly rather than guess.
